Holding all the Unanswerable Questions with Ginger McGee

Hello listeners. This week I am talking to Ginger McGee. She’s an author and mom to two boys, one who lives daily with Tourette’s and OCD.  I’m in the middle of reading her autobiography about her life and struggles surrounding her older son. It has been such a resonating story and we had a lot to discuss in this episode.

Ginger says becoming a mom to a child that has special needs brings something out of her she didn’t know she even had.  She has poured her heart and soul into this book she has written about her experiences. It started  as a book about her son and turned into such a treasure for other moms to relate to her experiences.

She reflects on how brilliant her son was, even at a young age, to keep her in a good head space. There are many moments she describes with her son saying not to act in anger because other people just don’t understand and know him. It’s always touching how children can have a better perspective on the complicated aspects of life.

Ginger is vulnerable and says there were some tough moments that she’s not sure how she made the choices she needed to and she often still feels guilt over certain moments. Her son is now 23, and she says she still struggles to help and protect him.  She wants her readers (and our listeners) to know that its okay to feel the hard feelings like anger and resentment. How you act on these feelings is the choice you have to make.

Who is Ginger:

Ginger lives with her husband, two sons, and five rescue animals in Savannah, GA where she was born and raised. She has a Bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in Secondary Education. She has been writing stories since she was 12 years old. Her first book, All These Things, a collection of poetry about her struggles with depression and anxiety landed her a gig at Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta opening up for two well-known poets. Her second book, He’s Not Broken has been praised for its rare honesty, and raw emotion. She strives to make her writing as relatable as possible. In addition to writing books, Ginger has written for many magazines, both national and regional. She is currently at work her debut YA novel that is based on a local ghost and her tragic story.

When she’s not writing, you can find her in her creative space Paper Soup Studio, where she does abstract painting, beadwork, embroidery, analog collage, and just about any other creative venture you can imagine.
