This week on the podcast, I got to talk with Kristin Herzberg Purdy—a fellow special needs mom, psychologist, and all-around powerhouse. Kristin is navigating life with two kids who have disabilities, including her son Paxton, who was diagnosed with a rare neurodegenerative condition. Oh, and did I mention she and her husband are partnering with UMass Chan Medical School to develop a gene therapy? Casual, right?
What struck me most about our conversation wasn’t just the gravity of her story—it was how beautifully honest she was about the emotional ride of it all. Kristen shared how grief can sometimes feel louder than compassion, and how even with all her training in trauma and anxiety, she finds herself sprinting through what should be a marathon.
We talked about identity, burnout, the pull to fix everything, and that very real moment when you realize: you’re not just parenting—you’re advocating, fundraising, and sometimes barely hanging on.
You’ll laugh a little, maybe cry a little, and I think you’ll walk away feeling less alone in whatever chapter you’re in.
