Welcome To The Special Needs Mom Podcast

Oh my gosh, I am so glad you are here.  If we were in person, you’d see me with a big smile on my face and I am a little shy, but I’d probably lean in for a hug.  I’ve dreamt about creating this podcast as a way of creating space for mothers, who happen to have a child with special needs part of their life.

When parenting a child like this (no matter the diagnosis), endless hours go towards supporting that child.  We read books, administer medications, manage outbursts, take them to doctor and therapy appoints, stay awake for sleepless nights, and GIVE endlessly.  I think that’s part of the beauty of motherhood, being so committing to something that we find the strength we didn’t know we had and give so powerfully.

BUT I am a firm believer that we have to put our own oxygen mask on first.  We have to nourish our physical, mental, and especially emotional well beings as we parent in these circumstances.  This podcast is a place where we’ll have the conversations that will contribute to us being a mom who not only knows how to nourish herself but actually does it.

In this first introduction episode, I share with you a little bit about my personal story and the story of how I became a mom to a special needs child.

You’ll also get my favorite thought about how to be fully responsible for parenting a child even when your child’s behavior doesn’t match your desire or expectation.

Please consider subscribing and sharing with friends. And pretty please consider leaving a review and telling me what you’d like to talk more about.

Oh, and I have a self-care for special needs mom’s resource I made especially with you in mind.  It’s for moms who feel stuck and tired. It’s perfect if your up against the impossible and regularly feel anxious and overwhelmed.  Check it out here.

I mentioned in the episode that I’d include all the official diagnosis that I parent.  I say that we have a cornucopia of diagnosis.

  1. Panhypopituitarism (diabetes insipidus/anterior pituitary deficiency)
  2. Diabetes insipidus
  3. TSH deficiency
  4. ACTH deficiency
  5. GHD (growth hormone deficiency)
  6. Cranial nerve III palsy
  7. Left spastic hemiparesis
  8. Craniopharyngioma in pediatric patient s/p resection (Brain Tumor)
  9. Blind right eye
  10. Morbidly Obese
  11. Acquired inequality of length of left lower extremity
  12. Normocytic anemia
  13. Impulse control disorder
