Healing from the Inside Can Be Simple with Dr. David Bilstrom

Hello and welcome to the podcast. This week, I am excited to share my conversation with Dr. David Bilstrom! He shares a passion and heart to help women and specifically special needs mom, just like I do. Listen in as he gives actual medical evidence to how small practices can help heal our bodies and potentially prevent ailments and diseases as stress ravages our daily lives.

Who is Dr. David Bilstrom:

I started out as a special needs parent

I became a special needs treater

I am now specializing in mothers because they are the caretakers ensuring the health of the entire family.

As a special needs parent, I had a child who at a young age was diagnosed with asthma and debilitating allergies that no one could adequately help.  I became a special needs treater after seeing how Functional Medicine created profound improvements in my son’s health who now lives allergy and asthma free.

I began specializing in mothers after understanding that 80% of people who get autoimmune disease are women.  And that the drivers of this immune system disruption account for almost 90% of the top 10 reasons why women die.

As I would treat women, I noticed that the moms would make sure that every member of the family (kids, parents, siblings, and eventually husbands) would end up seeing me and/or implementing what was necessary to optimize everyone’s health.  Moms have a natural passion for helping everyone and the fundamentals of Functional Medicine are easy to share once learned.  We know that so many chronic diseases are based on autoimmune disease, including 70% of autism is one particular autoimmune disease.  This autoimmune disease also drives every neurologic issue at childhood that is not specifically autoimmune disease.  The causes of autoimmune disease are also the drivers of all chronic disease in childhood.  Whether it be development delays, ADD, ADHD, asthma, allergies, anxiety, depression and menstrual hormonal issues.

  • How did you end up moving from special needs parent to a special needs treater and specifically helping moms and children?
  • How does autoimmune disease and the drivers of chronic disease contribute to sickness in moms and children?
  • How does the gut impact all childhood health issues, whether its brain, neurologic or immune system.

Most likely my special needs parenting experience with asthma and debilitating allergies is nothing compared to what some special needs parents go through.  No matter where on the special needs spectrum a child is, the fundamentals of how to help them improve their current and long term health is similar.   For example, the interventions we use with the children we see from all over the country with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, would be the same for any chronic disease of childhood as well to optimize the health of the mothers who care for these children.
