Learning to Live Inside The Life You Didn’t Choose with Joy Shaw

Some conversations stay with you because they challenge the way you think about your life. This week’s episode with Joy Shaw was one of those conversations for me.

Joy is a stroke survivor, mother, and transformation guide whose work focuses on helping people move through life’s most difficult transitions with awareness, compassion, and courage. Her perspective on healing is shaped not only by years of supporting others but also by her own experiences navigating trauma, recovery, and profound personal change.

One of the ideas Joy returns to throughout our conversation is the concept of the hero’s journey. In this framework, every life story contains moments where everything shifts, where we are pushed into experiences we never would have chosen, and where the path forward feels uncertain. Those moments often become the threshold where healing and transformation begin.

But according to Joy, transformation starts with awareness.

“You can’t become the author of your own story until you’re aware of the story you’re living and telling yourself every day.”

That awareness allows us to see our experiences differently. Instead of remaining trapped in a narrative where life has simply happened to us, we begin to recognize that we still have agency in how we respond and how we move forward.

Grief also plays a central role in Joy’s work. Rather than viewing grief as something to avoid, she sees it as an essential part of healing and meaning.

“Grief means things matter.”

That perspective reframes grief entirely. The pain we experience isn’t evidence that something has gone wrong in our lives. Instead, it reveals where love existed, where connection lived, and where something meaningful shaped who we are.

Another powerful part of Joy’s work is the role of witnessing. In many cases, healing doesn’t come from advice or solutions but from having someone reflect our experience back to us with compassion and understanding.

As Joy said during the episode, “Sometimes people just need to be given permission to be human.”

For many special needs moms, this idea resonates deeply. Much of this life involves navigating challenges that others don’t always see or fully understand. Being witnessed in those experiences can be profoundly validating and healing.

Joy also shared a metaphor that beautifully illustrates the healing process. She often talks about life in terms of ingredients. Many of us wish we had been given a different set of circumstances or a different path entirely. But healing begins when we stop trying to return to the life we expected and instead learn how to work with the ingredients we actually have.

From there, new possibilities begin to emerge.

This conversation explores grief, identity, trauma, personal responsibility, and the courage it takes to grow through experiences we never asked for. Joy brings a thoughtful and deeply reflective perspective to these topics, and I’m grateful she shared her insights with our community.
