Sleep Masks, Seizures & Shifting Seasons with Brooke Turbyfill

At some point on our road trip, somewhere between South Carolina and a very spontaneous detour to Clemson, my new friend Brooke told me she had Googled “special needs mom”—just to see if that was what she was now.

That moment stuck with me. Because haven’t we all had that “wait, is this me?” moment?

Brooke and I met as co-authors in The Courage to Raise—a beautiful book full of stories from moms walking the special needs path. During our time together, we shared hotel rooms (and a lot of sleep gear), swapped stories, and realized how much we needed this kind of space: honest, compassionate, and just a little bit ridiculous in all the best ways.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What it’s like entering the special needs world when your kids are already teens
  • How to honor our kids’ privacy while still getting the support we need
  • A happy accident that led us to lunch at Clemson LIFE—and left us feeling totally inspired
  • Why adjusting to new seasons of life is hard… and necessary

Oh, and if you’ve ever packed a back scratcher in your suitcase, you’re in good company.
